French aid for Syria's Christian site
A specialized French archaeological delegation visited Saint Simeon Monastery in northern Syria, one of the most prominent Christian landmarks listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011. The site has suffered significant damage due to war, earthquakes, and neglect. An assessment of the damage indicated that between 30% and 40% of the structure has been affected, with the western arch collapsing and other arches and walls damaged. However, parts of the monastery remain salvageable for restoration. The team aims to explore opportunities to restore the monastery in order to reopen it for tourism and pilgrims, potentially through cooperation between Syrian and French institutions, to enhance the site's historical and religious significance, especially following its partial destruction in recent years.
