The Sudanese government has rejected holding elections in the disputed Abyei area with South Sudan, considering Juba’s decision to include the region within electoral districts to be in violation of the signed agreements and protocols that regulate its legal and administrative status. The area lies between the Sudanese state of West Kordofan and the Northern Bahr el Ghazal province in South Sudan, and has enjoyed special status since the Abyei Peace Agreement in 2005.
