UN to study women's childbirth pressures in Tunisia

The United Nations is preparing to launch a study in Tunisia regarding the pressures women face related to reproductive decisions. The aim is to understand the extent to which threats, psychological pressures, and control influence their choices concerning pregnancy and contraception. The study, which will include a sample of 1,000 women aged between 18 and 49, seeks to determine whether women have the freedom to make their own reproductive decisions or are subjected to external pressures beyond their control. This initiative comes amid a decline in birth rates in Tunisia, where the fertility rate has decreased from 19.4 per thousand people in 2016 to 10.6 in 2024, with the fertility rate dropping to 1.54 children per woman in the same year. The survey is expected to involve phone interviews using a questionnaire that will take approximately 20 minutes. Results are scheduled to be announced by the end of October 2026. The study highlights the importance of understanding how prevalent these pressures are and their impact on reproductive decisions, particularly within the context of the demographic transition the country is experiencing.
