Russia affirms Assad asylum is final

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov confirmed that Moscow's decision to grant former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad political asylum is final and non-refundable, and the current authorities in Damascus have acknowledged this. This statement came after Assad's regime collapsed following a major attack by armed opposition factions in November 2024, which resulted in these factions entering Damascus in December of the same year, leading to Assad's resignation and departure from the country. Ahmad al-Sharif was appointed as the head of the transitional period, which is expected to last four to five years.
