Mahdia Olive Harvest Brings New Hope
Efforts continue to combat the spread of Olive Quick Decline Disease in the Moulouch region and the affected areas of Henischer Chatt and Oulad Mabruk, amid concerns about its impact on olive groves and farmers' livelihoods. Following appeals from the Regional Union of Agriculture and Fisheries in Mahdia, the Director General of Plant Health visited the affected areas on October 9, 2026, to assess the extent of the spread and coordinate intervention measures. The authorities agreed to treat around 80,000 olive trees, with the National Olive Office carrying out pruning to ease the burden on farmers. There was also a reaffirmation of the affected farmers' right to compensation for losses caused by the disease, especially since olive cultivation is the main source of income for many farming families.
