Al-Mahdiyah Olive Harvesting Concerns
A group of farmers in the Melloulach district of Mahdia have called for urgent intervention to curb the spread of olive tree sickness and save the affected trees. The disease has been spreading noticeably within the fields, leading to the wilting and death of branches, which threatens the productivity of the olive harvest. An awareness day was organized to educate farmers about the bacteria Pseudomonas savastanoi and its modes of transmission, emphasizing the importance of implementing preventive measures such as pruning infected branches and burning them, disinfecting farm tools, and spraying with copper-based pesticides. Some farmers refuse to cut the infected trees, stressing the importance of preserving them due to their deep connection with the land and their families. They are demanding swift action and the development of practical solutions to fight the disease and limit its spread, in order to protect the region’s olive resources.
