Migration issues in Tunisia discussed

International human rights organizations addressed issues related to migration management and border policies in the Mediterranean region during sessions of the UN Human Rights Council, with a particular focus on European cooperation with Tunisia and Libya. The organizations expressed concerns about the "border monitoring outsourcing" policy adopted by Europe to reduce migrant arrivals, linking it to an increase in hate speech and racism against migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. The statement also highlighted the case of activist Saadia Messabih, who was sentenced to eight years in prison, raising concerns over the deterioration of civil society rights and the handling of migration issues in Tunisia. These discussions are part of an international effort to hold responsible parties accountable for migrants’ rights, protect refugee rights, and emphasize the limits of European-North African cooperation in border monitoring and combating irregular migration.
