US State Declares Eid Holidays

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law an official recognition of two Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, making them the second religious holidays to be officially recognized in the state after Jewish holidays. The law, Bill 2017, allows government schools and colleges to close during these occasions and enables state employees to observe them, while courts remain open. This follows the enactment of additional laws acknowledging Jewish holidays such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, which permit students from kindergarten through high school to take excused absences for religious observances, although schools and companies are not required to close entirely on these days.
