Australian chess champion boycotts team over alleged genocide

Australian chess champion and the country's top-ranked player, Heather Richards, announced her refusal to participate in her scheduled match against the Israeli occupation team at the 46th Chess Olympiad, in protest against the ongoing genocide carried out by the occupation against the Palestinian people. Richards explained that she will join the sports boycott in solidarity with Palestinians and in rejection of the occupation and apartheid system, considering that Israel’s participation in this international event helps whitewash its reputation and promotes a false image of itself. Her decision garnered widespread support from Palestinian audiences and international organizations, who viewed it as a firm moral stance and a call for more athletes to take a stand by boycotting the Israeli occupation.
