Britain launches first Rwandan genocide trial

Britain has, for the first time, brought charges of genocide offenses related to the 1994 Rwandan genocide against a Rwandan citizen named Vincent Brown, accusing him of inciting murder. It is believed that Brown, 65 years old, incited his associates to kill members of the Tutsi population in April 1994 in Kigali, after the plane carrying the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi was shot down prior to the start of the genocide, which resulted in the death of approximately 800,000 people, mostly Tutsi. Brown is currently in custody and is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court, following an investigation that began in 2019 at the official request of the Kigali government. This case is part of international efforts to pursue those responsible for acts of genocide.
