A Sudanese Emergency Room has issued an urgent distress call after suspected cases of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) were recorded in the Frouk area of Khatum locality in North Darfur. The wave of disease carriers is increasing due to environmental decline, waste accumulation, and a shortage of clean water, all exacerbated by the collapse of the healthcare system caused by war and the lack of specialized diagnostic centers. Kala-azar is a severe and potentially deadly parasitic disease transmitted by the bite of sandflies. It causes prolonged fever, enlargement of the spleen and liver, severe anemia, immune deficiency, and can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated early. The emergency room has called on health and relief organizations to act immediately to strengthen disease surveillance, provide rapid diagnostic tools and life-saving medications, implement fly control campaigns, spray stagnant pools and marshes, and organize awareness campaigns on prevention methods and the use of bed nets—especially among displaced children and residents of remote villages who are most vulnerable due to malnutrition and weak immunity. They warned that delayed response could lead to an uncontrollable epidemic, threatening the lives of the population, particularly children.
