Tunisia: Oil imports at 85,000 bpd while exports reach 20,000

The energy system in Tunisia is facing increasing pressures, as the country imports approximately 85,000 barrels of oil daily and exports nearly the same amount of crude oil, despite a 12% decline in local production in 2025 to about 26,000 barrels per day. Tunisia’s annual oil consumption is around 9.7 million tons of oil equivalent, while its refining capacity can only cover about 30% of the market, forcing the country to import large quantities of petroleum products, mainly from Russia and Italy. Overall imports have declined except in May and August. The balance between exports and imports is partially due to certain types of locally produced oil not meeting refinery standards, in addition to commitments under international partnership agreements. This has led to increased dependence on imports and reduced energy independence to about 34% as of June 2026.
