Tunisia Alters EU Entry Rules for Pets

The European Union has introduced new regulations to standardize the monitoring, housing, tracking, and importation of dogs and cats, with the aim of reducing illegal trade in pets, which has a market value of around 1.3 billion euros annually. Europeans own more than 72 million dogs and 83 million cats. The implementation of these rules will be gradual, with mandatory microchipping of animals before sale beginning by August 31, 2031, and registration in a national database within five days of entering European territory. These measures aim to enhance tracking and reduce the activity of illegal trafficking networks, while granting breeders and vendors a lengthy transitional period to comply with the new regulations.
