Yashin's uniqueness explains goalkeepers' absence from Ballon d'Or

The article discusses the exceptional Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin, who won the Ballon d'Or in 1963 and remains the only goalkeeper to have received this award since its inception in 1956. Yashin distinguished himself by revolutionizing the concept of goalkeeping; he ventured out of the penalty area to lead attacks, in addition to his stunning saves and contributions to his national team’s and clubs’ successes. Comparisons are often made between goalkeepers and forwards because goals and key passes tend to garner more attention, whereas defensive contributions and unnoticed efforts remain highly significant. Although some goalkeepers like Buffon and Manuel Neuer have come close to winning the award, the nature of performance evaluation and the media’s focus on goals and assists make it difficult for a goalkeeper to obtain such a prestigious individual honor. The question remains whether a goalkeeper can win it again in the future, given football’s evolving appreciation for defensive performance in a more fair manner.
