Cristiano Ronaldo Wins Popularity but Not Award

The system for selecting the Ballon d'Or winner has evolved over the decades. Initially, it was based on a vote by 16 European journalists, who ranked five players from a list of 50 nominees, assigning points based on their positions. In 1995, reforms allowed for the nomination of players from European clubs of various nationalities, increasing the diversity of candidates. In 2007, the eligibility criteria expanded to include players worldwide regardless of their location, with the number of voters rising to 96 journalists from Europe and beyond. The points system also changed to account for multiple placements between 1 and 10. Subsequently, the participation of coaches and national team leaders was also introduced, giving them equal influence alongside journalists, and the voting model was modified again to place greater emphasis on individual performance and achievements throughout the entire season. In 2024, the system was further expanded to include ten players in the shortlist, with the points scale adjusted so that the top player now earns 15 points, providing greater opportunities for those ranked lower. The system continued to evolve to reflect changes in the selection process and eligibility criteria, while maintaining the core principle of collecting points and ranking players based on their performance over the seasons. This ensures that the most deserving winner is chosen, based on a diverse set of criteria including individual and team performance, as well as sportsmanship.
