Why Clubs Use the Extra Year Clause

Lissandro Martínez joined Manchester United in July 2022 on a five-year contract valued at £55 million. The deal included an option clause allowing the club to extend his contract for an additional 12 months. As his contract approaches its end next summer, the player has shown reluctance to renew, with speculation linking him to Barcelona or similar teams. The extension option is considered important because it helps the club protect his market value and increases the chances of making a financial profit upon sale, especially since he could leave for free if the option isn't exercised. Reports suggest that the option clause remains mostly confidential and is often used with young players, but it can create complications when it involves more experienced players. In previous cases, such as Alisson with Liverpool, the extension clause was activated to retain the player, but it can cause issues if either party is unwilling to extend, as happened with Harvey Elliott at Aston Villa, where the reluctance to renew led to absences and disruptions.
