Uruguay adopts virtual cards

The match between Nacional and Rentistas in the Uruguayan Football Cup saw the first use of an electronic virtual card instead of the traditional paper card. Referee Eduardo Furiela issued a yellow card using a tablet that glowed yellow. The technology aims to streamline match management by recording all events, such as cards and substitutions, directly into a central system, reducing the need for paper and providing instant data to media outlets. This comes after previous tests that encountered issues related to screen clarity and lighting. This experiment is part of efforts to improve refereeing management and develop technology for referees in football.
