FIFA sanctions Spain over Egypt match

The International Football Association (FIFA) imposed a fine of $20,000 on the Spanish national team and ordered them to close part of their stadium during their upcoming friendly match, due to chants containing anti-Islamic sentiments from their fans against Egypt last March. The chants included the phrase "Who doesn't jump is a Muslim," repeated several times, which led to an announcer warning the crowd and displaying a message condemning discriminatory behavior on the scoreboard. Spain's player Lamine Yamal, who is Muslim, condemned these behaviors, describing the responsible individuals as "ignorant and racist." Spanish police have opened an investigation, and FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish Football Federation. The federation argued that the word "Muslim" is not insulting; however, the committee deemed the actions discriminatory because they involved insults or mockery.
