Qatar Electricity Project Faces Reform Tests

The Qatari project for electricity generation in Lebanon aims to add approximately 2,890 MW of production capacity through the construction of two new plants, each with a capacity of 825 MW. It also includes solar and wind energy projects, the supply of energy from Syria, and the import of liquefied natural gas for 20 years. The project seeks to address the electricity outage crisis and ensure a steady supply around the clock. It relies on private sector investments without imposing upfront capital costs on the Lebanese treasury. The success of the project depends on drafting clear contracts, securing financial guarantees, providing funding, updating the grid, and converting the announced capacity into actual, stable production.
