Brazil electoral court sets 24-hour deadline for Meta to demonstrate fairness between Lula and Bolsonaro

The Supreme Electoral Court in Brazil plans to fine Meta one million Brazilian reais daily (approximately $200,000) if the company fails to comply with the rules ensuring equality between candidates Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro on social media platforms during the runoff election scheduled for October 25. This comes after accusations that Lula’s campaign has restricted content related to him on Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, with inconsistent handling of content from both candidates, raising concerns about the impact on the election's integrity. Although the company admitted to technical errors, the court concluded that Meta had not demonstrated sufficient commitment to compliance, leading to an increased fine and a warning of further penalties if non-compliance persists just two days before the runoff.
