Lacroix Urges Third Party to Prevent Lebanon Escalation

The United Nations emphasized the importance of continuing the UN’s role in supporting Lebanon’s stability, especially as the withdrawal of UNIFIL forces approaches at the end of 2026. The Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, highlighted the need for a third party—namely, the United Nations—to prevent escalation between the Lebanese Army and the Israeli Army, particularly concerning the future of the Blue Line and supporting the local community in the south. The meetings between Lebanese officials and the mission’s leadership discussed options after UNIFIL’s withdrawal and reaffirmed their support for Lebanon and Israel to fulfill their commitments, with a focus on protecting stability, preventing misunderstandings, and easing tensions.
