Vatican announces Pope Leo XIV has lung cancer

The Press Office of the Holy See has confirmed that Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer. He underwent a precise surgical procedure lasting approximately 90 minutes at the Jimmyli Hospital in Rome to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The operation was successful, with no complications reported. Doctors have confirmed that the adenomatous tumor was verified through tissue analysis, and the expected recovery period is about a week. The Pope previously announced his diagnosis early on during a speech in St. Peter's Square. This marks his first hospital admission since taking office in May 2025.
