Small Identity Gaps and Narcissism
The article focuses on the concept of "narcissism in minor identity differences" according to Sigmund Freud's theories. It highlights how groups with many similarities tend to exaggerate the importance of the differences that distinguish them, in order to affirm their own unique identity. This phenomenon leads to the amplification of differences and fuels feelings of competition and hostility, especially within religiously oriented educational institutions in Lebanon. Some institutions emphasize their particularity excessively, risking the marginalization of spiritual and moral values, fostering sectarian divisions, and constraining individuals' self-definition. This results in neglecting the national message and the education of others as full citizens. The article concludes with a call for a balanced approach to identities—where institutions focus on shared values and avoid overemphasizing distinctions—aiming to build a more inclusive and cohesive society.
