U.S. Reviews South Lebanon Reconstruction
The United States is working with the Lebanese government and donor countries to develop a financial mechanism for the reconstruction of southern Lebanon. This mechanism includes strict oversight of funding, linking reconstruction efforts to the expansion of the Lebanese army's presence, and strengthening the role of state institutions. The goal is to channel reconstruction funds through government agencies subject to oversight, with thorough scrutiny of companies and contractors to ensure they are not affiliated with Hezbollah, and to precisely identify owners and financial operators. This approach is part of a plan to connect the phases of reconstruction with enhancing the Lebanese army's presence and improving public services, aiming to reduce dependence on institutions linked to Hezbollah, and to strengthen the state's authority in areas where the army's deployment is extensive. The focus is on water, electricity, roads, and essential services in regions that meet security conditions.
