Britain maintains Jerusalem consulate under new terms

Britain announced today that its consulate in Jerusalem, which has been operating for nearly 200 years, will remain open but will function in a new format under the name "The British Mission." This comes after Israel requested its closure over a dispute regarding sanctions on Israeli settlements. The decision follows Israel's request in September to shut down the consulate within 30 days, in response to London's plans to impose a ban on trade of manufactured goods produced in settlements. The consulate is located in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem and serves the Palestinian community. It dates back to the British Mandate period in Palestine, prior to Israel's occupation of the city. Britain and Israel have reached an arrangement that allows the consulate to continue operating in a modified form, amid tensions surrounding Jerusalem's status and settlement issues. It is important to note that, according to international law, East Jerusalem remains an occupied territory, and Palestine aspires for East Jerusalem to serve as the capital of its future state.
