Britain opposes Israel’s consulate closure

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband confirmed that the British Consulate General building in East Jerusalem, which Israel ordered to close, will remain open and continue operating as an independent British representative offering services to Palestinians. This comes amid heightened tensions between London and Tel Aviv following Britain’s announcement of its intention to impose sanctions on settlements in the West Bank, which led to the withdrawal of some staff and families from the consulate. Britain is currently working to rebuild its diplomatic presence in Jerusalem, while continuing dialogue with the Israeli government regarding the situation. The UK emphasizes the importance of maintaining operations at the consulate despite the Israeli measures, and there are expectations that no retaliatory actions will be taken by the British side as long as negotiations continue.
