BBC: Urgent appeals for Sri Lankan condemned in Saudi Arabia over Facebook
The article addresses the case of Sri Lankan worker Anujan Sivarasa, who faces the death penalty in Saudi Arabia due to a Facebook post accusing him of blasphemy against Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Despite apologizing via a video, he was arrested last July and sentenced to five years in prison and a fine. However, in September, the sentence was raised to the death penalty after the prosecution requested the application of Sharia law instead of the Electronic Crimes Law. The government and embassies are coordinating efforts to seek clemency, amid international outrage and concern over the execution, which sparks debate about freedom of expression and human rights.
