Iran prepares to exit Iraq

The article discusses Iraq's celebrations of "Sovereignty Day" following the complete withdrawal of American forces from its territory. This has become a new test for Iraq's regime and its political and security roles. Despite the withdrawal, Iran-backed militias such as the Popular Mobilization Forces still dominate the scene, and Iran's celebrations of the U.S. exit are seen as a victory and a confirmation of Iranian influence in the region. There was no documented agreement in which Iraq officially requested Iran's intervention, but Iran’s presence and support for the withdrawal reflect its interests in reducing American influence and consolidating its positions in Iraq, amidst ongoing challenges related to full sovereignty and the disarmament of militias outside government control.
