Pride Causes Lebanese to Condemn Fellow Citizens

Metropolitan Elias Awad of Beirut and its dependencies of the Greek Orthodox Church affirmed that pride is the reason some Lebanese condemn and mistreat their fellow citizens under the pretext of superiority and awareness. Nevertheless, he considered that all people are equal before God, and that the only virtue is measured by how much one resembles God through humility, love, and mercy. He clarified that loving one's enemies does not mean justifying evil or allowing injustice; Christ does not ask for love of evil, but rather to protect the soul from evil and to reject violence and hatred. Emphasizing the importance of small deeds that are eternal in God's kingdom—such as forgiveness, visiting others, and helping—he explained that these actions contribute to freeing the heart from selfishness and greed, and plant peace and goodness in the lives of others, thereby opening the doors to salvation.
