Future of Islamic State prisoners
The article highlights the situation of ISIS prisoners after their defeat in 2019. Thousands of detainees have been transferred to facilities in northeastern Syria under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces, which are supported by the United States. Currently, investigations and trials are underway. Iraq has reported interrogating over 5,700 detainees and prosecuting them under anti-terrorism laws, with some sentences including death penalties. Some minors and those found not to be directly involved have been released. Washington is working to sustain cooperation with Baghdad and other countries to repatriate non-involved detainees, and to develop a judicial framework to resolve the status of those remaining. The focus is on preventing their return to conflict zones and fostering international cooperation to ensure their ongoing prosecution is effective.
