Tom Cruise Finds Unexpected Help

A video clip circulated showing actor Tom Cruise comforting a woman who appears distressed; it later turns out she was simply engrossed in browsing her phone and was not facing a real crisis. The video sparked widespread interaction on social media, highlighting the phenomenon of "Doomscrolling," which involves continuously consuming negative news, leading to psychological and physical effects such as anxiety, depression, and muscle and joint pains caused by prolonged sitting. In this context, the British government is considering imposing restrictions on apps that feature "infinite scrolling" to help reduce the harms of excessive usage. The woman in the video reposted the clip, prompting questions about whether the promotional use of the footage was genuine, especially since it was linked to the promotional campaign for Cruise’s new film, "Digger," although there’s no evidence that the incident was part of an advertising stunt. Engagement with the phenomenon of over-scrolling raises awareness of its risks and encourages individuals to manage their usage by setting time limits and turning off notifications, aiming to minimize the associated health and psychological harms.
