Lebanese Forces on Apple Season Sustainability

The article discusses the necessity of shifting from a seasonal approach to managing the Lebanese apple harvest crisis toward establishing a sustainable national system. This system should encompass production, processing, marketing, and export activities. Emphasizing the importance of quality management, it advocates for sorting fruits according to their final use and transforming part of the harvest into diverse food products such as juices, jams, chips, and dried apples to enhance their economic value. The article also underscores the need for creating a precise database to track both local and international market demand, developing integrated regional centers, and promoting contract farming between farmers and industries. Furthermore, it highlights directing investments toward infrastructure and export development to ensure economic continuity for farmers and producers. The solution begins with establishing a clear market before the harvest season and creating an environment conducive to investment—enabling the agricultural and industrial sectors to work hand in hand, rather than relying on seasonal aid—to ensure the sustainability of apple production and achieve long-term economic benefits.
