Tamara Al-Zein: Efforts to Prevent Waste Crises

The Ministry of Environment in Lebanon, represented by Minister Tamara Zayn, received new equipment for several facilities managing solid waste in Jeb Jinin, Zahle, and Baalbek. This is part of the "Recycling" project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of municipalities and increasing the efficiency of waste collection and processing operations. The minister affirmed that these equipment upgrades strengthen the capacities of facilities impacted by ongoing crises and support the sustainable development of waste management by improving source separation, enabling municipalities to benefit from new legislation, and reducing dependence on landfills. Additionally, the importance of funding was emphasized to establish a new landfill in Jeb Jinin once the current one reaches its capacity, as well as to develop the sorting facility in Zahle and add a line for producing alternative fuel from waste. In Baalbek, an incident of fire was addressed in one of the landfill cells, and the matter was referred to the Environmental Public Prosecutor, as part of efforts to improve the waste management system and reduce its environmental impacts.
