Environment authority clarifies factory chemical presence

The Lebanese Ministry of Environment has called for the handling of expired chemical materials stored at the Zouk and Jiyé laboratories, which are affiliated with the Lebanon Electricity Company. The ministry reaffirmed its legal and technical responsibility for managing these materials in accordance with Lebanese laws and international agreements. It emphasized that the materials are non-explosive and will be treated following strict environmental procedures. The ministry approved the treatment of certain substances such as Rodine, Hydrogel, and Sodium Metasilicate based on a scientific approach. It also authorized the use of the Zahle landfill for processing these wastes, while stressing the need to find alternative solutions or to export the materials if local treatment proves impossible—particularly asbestos waste, which requires export to a country with appropriate infrastructure. Furthermore, the ministry emphasized that any violation of environmental laws will hold the responsible parties legally accountable. It called on the media to exercise accuracy and avoid non-scientific comparisons with the Beirut Port explosion, in order to maintain credibility and ensure effective environmental protection.
