Spain targets large migrant smuggling network

The Spanish police announced the dismantling of one of the largest human smuggling networks across the Mediterranean Sea, arresting 78 individuals and seizing 18 speedboats valued at over six million dollars. The network was carrying migrants dangerously from Spain to the Mediterranean coast through at least 64 smuggling operations, transporting over 2,000 people for approximately 28 million dollars. The journeys were characterized by overcrowding and peril, with migrants being tied inside the boats and conveyed under harsh conditions. Four of the network’s leaders are suspected to be among those arrested. The operation was carried out in cooperation with Europol, as well as police forces from France, Portugal, and Poland, as part of security efforts to combat these dangerous smuggling activities.
