Jaara: Private Sector Key to Electricity Solution

Jaara: Private Sector Key to Electricity Solution

Samir Geagea, head of the Lebanese Forces Party, affirmed that the actual solution to Lebanon's electricity crisis began with the launch of the regulatory authority for the electricity sector, which opened the door for the private sector to invest in power generation and distribution. He pointed out that the current electricity supply situation is the result of the infrastructure and plants left behind by previous administrations. The current ministry has not required any additional funds from the state treasury since taking on its duties; instead, it relies on the cost of electricity itself. He also emphasized that involving the private sector is the only way to develop the sector without placing heavy financial burdens on the state and citizens. He indicated that offers will emerge within a year, with the private sector building plants and supplying electricity. Geagea highlighted the importance of establishing the regulatory authority to create opportunities for companies to invest, considering this as the beginning of a real solution. This includes implementing a plan to secure 24-hour electricity supply without depleting public funds. Furthermore, he confirmed that a forensic audit of the electricity ships' files will commence within weeks, and clear results concerning corruption and related issues are expected to emerge. Regarding addressing the crises more broadly, he stressed that the fundamental solution for Lebanon involves dealing with the root cause of the existence of a "state within a state" that controls strategic decisions. This requires resolving the illegal weapons issue and surrendering them to the army, rather than merely halting fire or Israeli withdrawal. He observed that focusing only on the symptoms without addressing the root causes of the crisis leads to escalation, and responsibility lies with those contributing to the persistence of "this abnormal situation" for half a century. Geagea rejected superficial solutions that do not tackle the core problem, emphasizing that attacking the sector and hints at removing illegal weapons are insufficient unless they are accompanied by sidelining the "state within a state" and halting strategic decisions made outside the state's authority. To effectively address the roots of the crisis, he explained that Lebanon cannot advance unless corruption is eradicated and there is a determined effort to restore sovereignty over its strategies. He reaffirmed that the solution requires collective action and a continuous struggle at both the state and societal levels to ensure a stable future.
