Minister of Finance Yasin Jaber explained that Lebanon is facing an imminent waste crisis due to a significant shortfall in funding for waste collection and treatment. The costs of these services had been covered by the Independent Municipal Fund, which is heavily indebted with hundreds of millions of dollars in debt. A ministerial committee has been convened to review and modify the fees on waste-producing materials and to propose measures to ease the burden on basic goods such as food and fuel. Jaber confirmed that the necessary laws to diversify sources of funding have become effective, and that tenders are currently being prepared to ensure the continuity of waste management services. He warned that the current exceptional funding cannot be sustained for long and called for early action to prevent a larger environmental and health crisis.
