Deep Sleep Study Reduces Alzheimer Risks

A recent study published in the journal Neurology has found that the quality of electrical activity during deep sleep influences the progression of Alzheimer's disease, with levels of the neurotransmitter orexin being related to the condition. Researchers studied 60 recently diagnosed Alzheimer's patients (with mild to moderate stages, all over 60 years old) by monitoring their sleep patterns overnight and collecting cerebrospinal fluid samples in the morning to measure orexin levels. The patients were followed for three years to observe the development of Alzheimer’s symptoms. The results indicated that higher orexin levels may be associated with increased symptoms such as apathy and depression. Evidence also suggests that reducing orexin levels through medications might help regulate sleep and promote the clearance of beta-amyloid and tau proteins linked to brain deterioration. However, the relationship between orexin and the disease remains not fully understood. These findings are significant for the development of new treatments aimed at preventing or slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
