Cannabis for epilepsy prompts debate

A recent study suggests that nearly daily use of cannabis, especially products containing THC with psychoactive effects, may be associated with increased seizure frequency in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Chronic users exhibited a higher rate of seizures—an average of three per year—compared to non-users, who experienced about 1.32 seizures on average. Notably, these individuals were in monitored care units more than five years before their first seizure. However, the study cannot establish a causal relationship between cannabis use and increased seizures. It analyzed medical records from 64 patients and calls for broader research to better understand the effects of cannabis, particularly products containing THC rather than cannabidiol (CBD)-based treatments.
