Rats with partial human brains for neurological study

A team from Stanford University successfully developed mice with brains containing human brain cells, in which approximately 4 million neural cells were implanted—about half the size of a mouse's brain—to study complex neurological and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, and dementia. The mice did not become smarter; however, the human tissue helped improve some motor and cognitive issues, and showed a sensitive response to oxygen deprivation, with the presence of "Von Economo" cells, which are linked to behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. These models are used to study brain development and related diseases, raising ethical questions about the welfare of animals implanted with human tissue.
