NY Garbage Barges and Landfill Accumulation

The article details the history of Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island, which opened in 1948 as a temporary waste site but expanded into one of the largest landfills in the world, holding around 150 million tons of trash over several decades. Following its closure in 2001, the site was repurposed into Freshkills Park, a nearly three-times Central Park-sized green space, with the first section opening in 2023. The transformation highlights efforts to rehabilitate a landscape created by urban waste into a natural area for recreation and wildlife conservation.
