Controversy over competitive yoga
The article discusses the push to make yogasana, a form of competitive yoga, an Olympic sport, with India advocating for its inclusion ahead of the 2036 Games. Despite traditional yoga emphasizing self-awareness and non-competitiveness, organizers argue that competitive yogasana, which resembles gymnastics in strength and balance, can attract global interest. Critics raise concerns that turning yoga into a contest conflicts with its spiritual principles, though proponents believe it can inspire youth and support traditional practices through sport. The movement faces hurdles, including recognition issues within Indian sports organizations and international federation expansion, but efforts continue to establish yogasana as a legitimate competitive sport on the world stage.
