A study from the German Institute Ifo suggests that restrictions on access to training data for artificial intelligence could cause Germany to lose up to $173 billion annually in economic added value. At the same time, Europe is striving to keep pace with the United States and China in developing advanced AI models. The study indicates that generative AI has the potential to boost the German economy by €440 billion annually by 2034, but data restrictions could reduce these gains by more than €155 billion. Experts have called for clear and flexible regulatory rules, especially regarding exemptions for extractive activities of texts and data for commercial purposes, to avoid hindering investment and innovation in the field of AI across Europe.
