The date palm exhibition in Deir ez-Zor has been launched under the auspices of the Syrian Ministry of Agriculture and the FAO, with the aim of strengthening the date palm sector in Syria. The exhibition showcased 25 varieties of dates, including rare and economically important types, raising awareness about the significance of the sector, facilitating knowledge exchange, and encouraging government and private sector support to rehabilitate plantations and increase production. Date palm farmers face challenges such as rising costs of diesel and fertilizers, while the ministry is striving to expand green spaces and improve the value chain through projects including the rehabilitation of the date palm propagation center and the establishment of a tissue culture laboratory, to enhance production and promote sustainability in the eastern region. Syria has approximately 147,000 date palm trees, with an annual production ranging between 1,500 and 4,000 tons. Emphasis is placed on supporting the sector to bolster food security and economic development.
