Researchers warn of online exposure of thousands of European renewable systems

Dutch studies have revealed that thousands of renewable energy systems across Europe, including wind farms and solar power plants, are exposed online, allowing attackers access to their control interfaces. The research found that approximately 8,547 systems across 35 countries are vulnerable to control, including login pages and operational interfaces that display data and tools for management, with some systems capable of controlling multiple turbines or entire stations. Spain and Germany are among the most at risk, with 2,766 and 672 solar systems, respectively, and 212 German wind systems identified. This exposure threatens the security of vital infrastructure and increases the risk of power outages or sabotage. The researchers recommended quickly disconnecting management interfaces from the internet and strengthening security measures to reduce cyber risks threatening Europe's energy sector.
