Total launches gas field in Nigeria
Total Energies and its Nigerian partner, Oando, have announced the final investment decision to develop the Ema gas field off the coast of Nigeria, with the aim of supplying gas to the Nigeria LNG plant. Production is expected to commence in 2028, reaching a capacity of up to 350 million cubic feet per day (more than 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily). The field is located in shallow waters near Bonny Island and will be developed via a platform connected to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant by a 22-kilometer pipeline. The platform will be powered from onshore electricity, with no gas flaring on site, and equipped with a methane emissions monitoring system. The project will increase the Nigeria LNG plant’s capacity from 22 to 30 million tonnes annually, and is characterized by low costs and emissions, as well as a significant local content component—Nigerian companies will serve as the main contractor, employing around 60 percent of the workforce during development. Nigeria is one of Total Energies’ key producing countries, with an output of approximately 188,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025.
