US oil supplies fall as gasoline and distillates rise

U.S. Energy Information Administration data showed that crude oil inventories decreased by 391,000 barrels to reach 424.1 million barrels during the week ending September 4th, significantly below the expected decline of 1.55 million barrels. Conversely, gasoline inventories increased by 1.27 million barrels to 206.9 million, while distillate inventories (diesel and heating oil) rose by 2.09 million barrels to 106.3 million, amid strong activity in refineries. U.S. oil imports also rose by 1.12 million barrels per day, while exports declined by 1.1 million barrels per day. The report indicated a rise in crude oil consumption at refineries by 90,000 barrels per day, with their operating rate dropping to 97.8%. Following the release of the data, crude oil futures prices increased.
