Japan adopts blockchain for instant securities settlement

Japan plans to develop a financial infrastructure based on blockchain technology to enable instant settlement of stock and government bond transactions, aiming to modernize the payment system and strengthen the competitiveness of the financial market. A study group is expected to begin in the upcoming summer, with an implementation plan to be finalized by early 2027. The new system may include converting part of bank accounts into digital tokens and trading them over a blockchain network.
