Central Banks' Gold Holdings Set to Increase

Central Banks' Gold Holdings Set to Increase

World Gold Council reports expect central banks to remain major buyers of gold over the next two years, despite a slowdown in purchases compared to previous years. Last year, banks added 863 tons of gold, which is less than the over 1,000 tons they typically purchased annually between 2022 and 2024. However, this figure remains above the average of 473 tons recorded from 2010 to 2021. In the first half of 2025, central banks increased their gold holdings by approximately 345 tons, with Poland leading the buyers with 102 tons, followed by China, Turkey, and others. Demand from central banks for gold is expected to continue into 2025, despite an anticipated dip in purchases compared to 2024. It is estimated that central bank demand will remain strong, supported by factors such as diversification of reserves, geopolitical considerations, and current gold prices—which have reached $4,640 per ounce. Currently, gold's share in global reserves ranges from about 15% in emerging markets to around 30% in advanced economies. This share is projected to rise to 29% by the first quarter of 2026, as central banks continue to rely on gold as a safe haven and diversify their investments—especially in light of an expected decline in the U.S. dollar's share within global reserves.
