The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the largest emergency oil stockpile in the world. Established in 1975 to protect the U.S. economy from disruptions in oil supplies, especially following the Arab oil embargo crisis. It consists of over 60 salt caverns along the Gulf Coast, with a capacity of more than 714 million barrels. The reserve is used to absorb excess oil or in emergencies such as disasters and geopolitical crises, particularly as stocks have fallen to their lowest level since 1983, dipping below 300 million barrels due to releases intended to address market disruptions, such as the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The United States can draw oil from the reserve in about 13 days after an order is issued. It is a vital tool for energy security, but declining reserves weaken its ability to respond to new crises, especially amid escalating international tensions that threaten global oil supplies.
